New information boards will encourage happy shoppers in a Mendip village.

Mendip District Council has this week unveiled new shopping information boards in Street to highlight the delights on offer in the village's High Street.

Four new boards have been installed at key locations in Street with much of the funding for the project coming from the council's regeneration budget, which is led by regeneration officer Judi Thompson.

The project has won support from Street Chamber of Trade, Street Parish Council, the Street Society, Clarks Village and the Tourist Information Centre.

The shopping guides will replace the worn and difficult-to-read boards which were located at Mundy's Walk, Crispin Hall, Cranhill Road car park and opposite Greenbank Swimming Pool. It is also hoped a new one might be installed outside the district council's new toilet block in Southside car park.

Regeneration officer Judi Thompson said: "These new shopping boards are bright, colourful and more importantly much easier to read than the previous ones.

"We hope that they will bring extra vitality to shops and businesses in Street by giving shoppers a quick reference guide to what is on offer. I would also like to thank the partners in this project who have made it a success."

The aim of the new boards is to encourage more shoppers to enjoy the array of shops and businesses in Street's High Street and to entice visitors to Clarks Village into other parts of Street.

Street Parish Council vice chairman and local district councillor David Pipes said: "Street is well known for its variety of shops. The parish council hopes the new shopping information boards will show visitors that there is much more to see in the High Street and encourage them to venture beyond Clarks Village. We are grateful for the help of all the local organisations that have supported the project."

In addition to promoting businesses, the maps also highlight important local landmarks as well as the route of the Street Society's heritage trail.

Cllr John Osman, the district council's portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "Street is already a popular shopping destination, and this project will help continue to boost the local economy and encourage visitors to shop in the High Street as well as Clarks Village.

"One of the district council's key aims is to enable an environment where individuals and businesses can prosper through encouraging tourists and shoppers to stay longer and visit the wide range of shops and businesses on offer."
